University News “culture editor” Jessie Burche, certainly has been a good friend to the campus’ LBGT community. For those of you not up to speed, LBGT stands for lesbian, bi-sexual, gay, and transgendered. Mr. Burche informed us three weeks ago that the University of Missouri-Kansas City was declared by The Advocate College Guide for LGBT Students, as one of the “top 100 friendliest campuses for the LGBT population.”
“We are the only school in Missouri to actually have recieved that award and one of only a handful in the Midwest,” said David Greene, the LGBT Program and Services Coordinator.
In an article title, “Community leaders unite against hate,” Burche reports on the recent visit to the campus by the mother of Matthew Shepard. “We just passed a milestone in Wyoming of over 500,000 people in our state … still we are outnumbered by our sheep, which actually is the diversity in the state of Wyoming,” Shepard joked.
She explained because Wyoming is 96 percent white, the residents don’t have the opportunity to learn from different people and cultures. (Wasn’t Shepherd white?)
“Ignorance creates fear and fear creates anger and hate,” Shepard said. “What we don’t do in Wyoming is educate about diversity because we feel, our educators feel, our town fathers feel ‘why should we study that when we don’t experience it here?'” Read more…

I find it highly interesting that an educated black person involved with politics seems to so completely miss the current civil rights issue of our day, gay rights. Since when is an agenda of equality and tolerance combined with a pressing need for progress something to deride?
