Skelton Flip Flops on Troop Redeployment

Congressman Skelton seems to be having second thoughts on his “strong support” for the plan to move U.S. soldiers from Japan and station them in Guam. On one of his annual winter trips to the sunny and warm island – where he was called a “big hit” – the Congressman stated the buildup “will be worth it.” According to Congressional Quarterly, Congressman Skelton’s views have dramatically changed:

“While the Navy has supported moving out of Futenma, it doesn’t like the replacement locale and the House Armed Services chairman, Missouri Democrat Ike Skelton , agreed after visiting the island. He says there is not enough runway space and too many obstructions. “It just ain’t going to work,” Skelton says. “I wouldn’t want to land a plane there.” Skelton added language to the defense bill that would prevent the Pentagon from waiving Navy safety requirements for the replacement airfield. You mean to tell us, that the Chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, didn’t know before he arrived on the island that the runways were insufficient? Just think of the tax dollars that could have been saved if Skelton and the other traveling committee members had that information beforehand. Something doesn’t smell right here, especially after his glowing endorsement of the island after his return from there.
