On Monday March 3rd, All 50 states will receive a grade from the Pew Center on the States, which will measure their performance in serving the public in a range of areas from budget and finance to roads and bridges. The Missouri Political News Service was honored to be invited on a conference call with the managing director and project director to discuss the results.

Released in partnership with Governing Magazine, the report is the only 50-state assessment of its kind to measures performance in four key areas: money, people, information and infrastructure. The report presents a clear and complete picture of how states are doing by examining effectiveness in these key areas, and provides states with the knowledge and tools to pursue innovative solutions to improve performance and service to the public

The Grading the States 2008 report reinforces the importance of state management practices and their impact on taxpayers’ pocketbooks and quality of life. At a time when states are facing severe budget deficits, a volatile economy, a housing mortgage crisis, recent natural disasters, allegations of corruption and deteriorating infrastructure, there is an urgent need for state leaders to make government work better and cost less.
