The van runs on diesel as well as recycled vegetable cooking oil collected periodically from a variety of Kansas City restaurants. The oil is purchased in 55 gallon drums at about 70 cents a gallon, Mr. Rotert said. According to a promotional flier issued by Mr. Cleaver’s office, it “leaves in its wake the unmistakable smell of French fries (with a hint of barbecue).”
Mr. Cleaver is a member of the House’s Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming. “I bet we get 10 miles to the gallon,” Mr. Rotert said. “It’s probably not the ideal fuel, but it serves as a good way for us to talk about alternative fuels.” Read more…
