Governor Jay Nixon has renewed his luxury box at the Mizzou Arena for this seasons men’s basketball games, ensuring that he will be able to talk with contributors watch all of the games in the lap of luxury. Of course, at a time when unemployment is at a 26 year high and many Missourians can’t even afford the cheap seats Nixon continues to watch games in a VIP box.
As readers might remember from this spring when we first reported, Governor Nixon has been making his Missouri Democratic Party pay for his suite and senior staff including Jack Cardetti were making fundraising calls to lobbyist in Jefferson City to help underwrite the cost of the suite.
It is shocking to us that Governor Nixon is so arrogant to think that special interest should subsidize his luxury box. As an added bonus, having a campaign committee pay for the box means that he does not have to disclose his activities there – there will be no record of who he invites to attend games with him or why they are invited. Indeed, he won’t even have to disclose who is paying for each game – the party will take the money and claim that they are paying. Instead of being forced to play by the rules, he will be free to go through his normal shakedown process – getting contributors in the room, twisting their arm, and brokering deals to keep the money flowing in for his campaign and for his party.
