Quote of the Day: “We Can’t Let History Repeat Itself.” Former Senate Minority Leader Concerned About “GOP Takeover”

Make no mistake, tax cheaters cheat us all, and the IRS should enforce our laws to the letter. ” Sen. Tom Daschle, Congressional Record, May 7, 1998

Former Senate Minority Leader (and tax cheat) Tom Daschle is sounding the warning call today in an email to his fellow nervous Democrats:

“In 1993, my Democratic colleagues elected me Majority Leader of the United States Senate, starting in 1994. There was only one problem. By the time 1994 came, we weren’t in the majority anymore.

What went wrong? In hindsight, what started the GOP takeover were the two governors’ races — New Jersey and Virginia — in 1993. Republicans won both those seats, and that gave them the momentum to take back Congress in the 1994 midterm elections.

In just under 100 days, voters will once again go to the polls in New Jersey and Virginia. We can’t let history repeat itself.”

With the president’s approval ratings falling almost as fast as the support for his socialized health care plan, the giddyness and belief that the GOP was a dead man walking may have been a bit pre-mature. Generic Congressional polls now have Republicans ahead for the first time in two years.

Adding to their worry is the fact that the Dems are trailing badly in the Virginia and New Jersey governor races, and, incumbent Senators’ Dodd, Spector and Boxer are polling poorly and are thought to be very vulnerable.
