Back in February, many Republican insiders around the state thought it was a huge mistake for Sarah Steelman to cede the entire annual Lincoln Days convention to Roy Blunt and his supporters, especially when Saturday night’s keynote speaker – Rep. Tom Coburn of Oklahoma – practically endorsed Mr. Blunt in his remarks. What a difference a few months make! With Blunt reporting half the donations of Robin Carnahan recently, the sit back and wait strategy may be paying off for Steelman. What’s that old saying about not throwing a drowning man a life preserver?

“I am still looking at it,” Steelman said. “I know everybody is in a big hurry but I have my own time frame. I’m very serious about it.”
“He’s boasted about himself being a great fundraiser so I just assumed he would be as competitive with some of the other races around the country that are similar to this one,” Steelman said.
