“Make no mistake, tax cheaters cheat us all, and the IRS should enforce our laws to the letter. ” Sen. Tom Daschle, Congressional Record, May 7, 1998
If you guessed that each had run ins with the tax man while either trying to get confirmed to a cabinet position or elected, then you are correct!
From the Washington Times (7/12/06)
When Cleaver decided to run for the House seat, he faced opposition from Democratic newcomer Jamie Metzl, a former White House fellow with an Ivy League pedigree.
Metzl out-raised Cleaver and raised questions that turned the campaign bitter.
Much of the criticism surrounded a suburban car wash that Cleaver bought with the help of an $80,000 state-backed business loan. Metzl pointed out the fund was supposed to help businesses in the inner city, not the suburbs. Cleaver owed two years of back taxes on the car wash when he entered the race. He quickly paid up after the debt was reported by local media. He also had not provided workers compensation insurance until that issue also came to light.
