The News Leader is reporting today that the Steelman campaign has apparently “found more stem cell money.” This revelation comes on the heels of the disclosure Monday that Steelman had acepted stem cell money last year when she was running for re-election as state treasurer. Steelman, who is pro life, did not report the donation on her disclosures. The money in question in today’s story was donated to Steelman four years ago by James and Virginia Stowers of the Stowers Institute, big supporters of embryonic stem cell research.
Both Steelman and Hulshof are severely lacking in name recognition in this campaign – more so Hulshof – but this certainly isn’t the way to go about raising your profile. The Hulshof campaign has started to take the gloves off and Steelman is making it real easy for them. Here’s a quote from a Hulshof spokesman:
“They’re just being less than candid with Missourians. They don’t act until they’re called on the carpet. They say as little as they possibly can, then they call it a ‘clerical’ error.”
It seems the Steelman campaign has been on a blunder a week pace – two this week already – since the webmaster revelation. Party loyalists have confided to MOPNS that they think Steelman is the better candidate to beat Jay Nixon this fall, but they are wondering if Steelman is “ready for prime time?”
