MRP: If A Tree Falls In The Forest And Nobody Hears It, Does It Make A Sound?

In the oddest argument possible, the Missouri Democratic Party responded to the Supreme Court’s ruling on requiring Voter IDs with , “People impersonating someone else at the polls is absolutely undocumented, and we don’t see (it) here. So, to an essence what we had a couple years ago was (the) legislature trying to seek an answer for a problem that didn’t exist.”

“I believe that if a tree falls in the forest with nobody around it does make a sound,” said Tina Hervey, communications director, “I also know that Democrats fighting tooth and nail to prevent good laws from being enacted and enforced would help us insure the integrity of our elections. It is more than disingenuous to say that no one has ever been caught cheating at the polls by impersonating a different voter when the precise law that would allow us to catch people doing just that has been vigorously opposed by Democrats who want to cheat.”

We have one question for the Missouri Democrat Party. To claim that “people impersonating someone else at the polls is absolutely undocumented” is a ridiculous statement and insults our intelligence. We’re positive there are court cases involving individuals who have been prosecuted for impersonating someone else at the polls. The instances are probably small because in Missouri and in other states, voters can vote with an utility bill or a picture-less ID card from their local election board. Most of the elections workers are senior citizens, so how stringent do you think they are at scrutinizing a voter’s identification? And besides, in a post 911 America, people need to have valid identification. How do you expect to board a train or airplane? I think we can all agree that probably the best way to indentify an individual  is with a valid, state issued ID.

I have in my possession a photo of Sen. Kit Bond and “Fritzy,” the dog registered to vote in the city of St. Louis. Have run it a couple of times in “The Republican.” So the statement, “People impersonating someone else at the polls is absolutely undocumented, and we don’t see (it) here”
might be true only because it says “people” — it did not say “dogs.”
