The powerful fire fighters unions have again poked their fingers in the eyes of South County taxpayers.
South County state representatives Walt Bivins (R-97) and Jim Lembke (R-85) have co-sponsored HB 1730 which authorizes a fire protection district to submit to the voters a decrease in the property tax rate. The unions oppose this bill because it would break the monopoly of union-supported elected officials on fire district Boards of Directors to award unlimited salary, benefits and pension increases to employees.
In 2007, the Mehlville FPD Board voted to place Proposition TD on the ballot to allow taxpayers to decrease their fire district property tax rate.
When Proposition TD was removed from the ballot, the presiding St. Louis County Judge made no citation to law for his decision. Those actions prompted state rep Walt Bivins to request a legal opinion from Attorney General, Jay Nixon. Nixon refused to render an opinion on the grounds that the St. Louis County Judge had already ruled on the case. Read more…
