Rep. Clay sure believes in passing around the wealth, especially when it comes taxpayer’s dollars and his relatives. Last week, Clay was complaining that earmarks disproportionately go to districts represented by his white colleagues.
Citizen’s for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington reported that the campaign of Rep. William Lacy Clay (D-Mo.) paid his sister’s law firm more than $100,000 during the last two election cycles for consulting and other services, even though she is a registered lobbyist. In addition, his campaign committee has made contributions to his mother-in-law’s campaign for the Arkansas state legislature and has reimbursed family members for various campaign related expenses. Finally, Rep. Clay’s campaign committee has even made payments to a scholarship fund founded by his father.
Michelle Clay (sister):
• Michelle Clay is a registered lobbyist representing the Kansas City International Airport. She previously represented the City of St. Louis.
• In the 2006 election cycle, Rep. Clay’s campaign committee paid the law offices of
Michelle Clay $51,800 for consulting fees and services. The company received an
additional $9,693 for reimbursements.
• In the 2004 election cycle, the campaign committee paid the law offices of Michelle Clay
$52,514 for consulting and services and $803 for reimbursements.6 Ms. Clay was also
