Jay Nixon – who has purposely stayed as far away as he can from Ward Connerly’s controversial ballot measurefor fear of alienating rural, conservative Democrats – has found another issue he thinks will “pacify the Negroes.” Nixon held a press conference yesterday in St. Louis with Sen. Rita Days (who is African American) to decry the practices of the “pay day” loan industry.
Nixon is attempting to add a third issue to the Democrats’ traditional appeal to African Americans. In recent elections, Democrats’ have emphasized with some success, raising the minimum wage and restoring the Medicaid cuts. Unfortunately, if you listen to the Democratic Party, you would never know that most African Americans are solidly ensconced in the middle class. It is an insult that they don’t think educating our children, saving for our retirements; lowering our tax burdens; and protecting us from terrorists; is not as important to us, as it is to the majority.

He has also tried to take credit all year for Missouri’s “No Call” list — which in fact was a creation of the Republican General Assembly … and if I remember correctly, it was done under then-Speaker Catherine Hannawy and then-Senate Pro-Tem Peter Kinder. Roland
