University (UMKC) is LGBT Friendly

More proof the world is going to hell in a handbasket? How soon will it be when “LBGT friendly” is a criteria used by U.S. News and World Report to rank our colleges?

The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Office gives away t-shirts that declare “I am more than a label,” but UMKC has been labeled.

According to “The Advocate College Guide for LGBT Students,” UMKC is one of the top 100 friendliest campuses for the LGBT population.

“We are the only school in Missouri to actually have recieved that award and one of only a handful in the Midwest,” said David Greene, the LGBT Program and Services Coordinator.

Greene said the LGBT office makes a great effort to ensure that students feel safe on campus. One thing the office has done is install an LGBT housing liaison in one of the dorms. The idea is that students who are having problems with their or someone else’s sexual orientation can speak to the liaison and solve some issues.

There is also a Queers and Allies group for the LGBT population and their friends and supporters. Read more…
