Senate President Pro Tem Mike Gibbons – who has long been rumored to be eyeing a run for Attorney General next year – has been keeping a very low profile for a presumptive candidate. Many are speculating that the impressive first quarter fundraising totals for announced candidate Sen. Chris Koster, coupled with former Speaker Catherine Hannaway’s high profile appointment as U.S. Attorney (Hannaway is rumored to be contemplating a run as well) has shown the Kirkwood Republican the handwritng on the wall.
Republican insiders at the Capitol, tell MOPNS that Gibbons has confided to close supporters that he has all but abandoned his bid for AG, and is instead angling to do something entirely different. They speculate he will seek a judgeship once his legislative career is over.
“Mike was and is a great legislator and leader, unfortunately for him, he’s not the most charismatic guy in the world. That is definitely going to hurt him against Koster and Hannaway in a three way primary,” said one insider.
The Missouri Political News Service will continue to investigate.
