Advocates Jumpstart Campaign to Reunify City and County

November 21st, 2013 by Damien Johnson · No Comments

Better Together held a rally at the Cheshire Inn to announce a 16 month campaign to reunifying St. Louis City and St. Louis County on Tuesday, November 19 2013. The campaign hopes to hear from a diverse group of people and listen to concerns about a potential reunification. As Ambassador George Herbert Walker said, Better Together is not advocating a merger or St. Louis City reenter the county as another city, but advocating reunification in some way and want to start a discussion on how to make that happen.

Supporters of reunifying the city and county argue a merger will benefit both the city and county by reducing redundancies and cutting costs for both the city and county. Last summer, both passed intergovernmental cooperation agreements to improve the region’s economy; however, reunification might not be as beneficial as supporters believe. According to Steve Berg’s article to the MinnPost, Indianapolis merged with Marion county in 1969, but didn’t unify the police, fire department, or schools until 2005.
