St. Louis Alderman Derides Robin Carnahan’s African American Outreach

“How do you run away from President Obama and at the same time get the people who really know and love Obama, more than they know and love you, to come out to vote?” — Antonio French, 21st ward alderman

Boy, when it rain it pours! Last week, we learn that DSCC is abandoning Robin Carnahan’s failing campaign, and now we learn that African American are abandoning her too! At least they can’t say they weren’t warned.

The Wall Street Journal:

ST. LOUIS—Democrats say it is critical that they turn out African American voters this November. But for Robin Carnahan, the party’s nominee for Senate in Missouri, that is proving to be a tricky proposition….Yet, Ms. Carnahan is keeping a distance from the president and Democratic leaders.

Ms. Carnahan skipped a home-state fund-raiser with Mr. Obama in March. She opposed his recent plan to spend $50 billion on infrastructure. And siding against Mr. Obama, she has joined with Republicans in saying that tax cuts due to expire soon should be extended even for the wealthiest families.

“It appears she’s definitely distancing herself from the president, and I think that’s definitely a mistake,” said Clifford Franklin, president of Fuse, a St. Louis advertising agency that targets African Americans, and produced the radio and print ads that focus on Mr. Obama.

And like most Democrats when they’re in a desperate race, they go back to the old reliable well:

On Sunday, Ms. Carnahan began her day with an African American congregation, Central Baptist Church in St. Louis. In her remarks, she made only an oblique reference to Mr. Obama, saying that “sometimes we move forward in great leaps, and we’ve done that recently.” Read more…

Is this how you lose respectably?
