Nixon Nominates Tax Cheat to St. Louis Police Board

March 30th, 2010 by jjjameson · No Comments

If this were any other politician, this headline might be surprising. As reported in the Post-Dispatch, Governor Nixon’s newest nominee for the St. Louis Police Board of Commissioners has a long-standing history of not paying his taxes on time and has been taken to court four times by the city for outstanding taxes. Two weeks ago, we reported that Governor Nixon provided a “stimulus” job for another former pol who doesn’t like to pay her bills either.

This is unacceptable. For Nixon’s camp to say that his appointment should go forward because he has no current tax balance to pay is ludicrous. They expect the Senators who are charged with confirming him (and the people of Missouri as a whole) to ignore his pattern of delinquent behavior and trust that he has changed after finally paying delinquent taxes dating to the 1990s. He was a judge, yet he failed on multiple occasions to obey the law. How can we reasonably expect him to be a productive member of the Police Board?

The Police Board of Commissioners already has a bad public image. Jay Nixon should know that appointing someone who has repeatedly run afoul of the law will do nothing but make it worse. We deserve better judgment from our governor.
