Children are more likely than adults to develop symptoms of E. coli O157:H7 infection. Most people with the infection will have:

  • Severe stomach cramps and stomach tenderness.
  • Diarrhea, watery at first, but often becoming very bloody.
  • Nausea and vomiting.

Chad Livengood of the Springfield News Leader, arguably Missouri’s best political reporter, has a shocking – and frankly disgusting – piece today exposing Jay Nixon’s negligence in allowing the public to frolic in the poopy Lake of the Ozark during the 4th of July holiday:

On June 3, a Missouri Department of Natural Resources official asked staffers for a copy of a report showing dangerously high levels of E. coli in Lake of the Ozarks, documents show.

“DNR Deputy Director Joe Bindbeutel requested the report to take to a meeting the next day in Gov. Jay Nixon’s office, according to e-mails obtained by the News-Leader through a Sunshine Law request.

Internal documents offer the first evidence that the report’s alarming findings may have left the agency before officials have previously acknowledged. DNR Director Mark Templeton has previously said Bindbeutel made the decision to withhold the report from the public without consulting him.

Nixon’s office denied knowing anything about the E. coli report until June 23, three days before the testing results were quietly released to the public. Nixon first learned of the report, which had been kept secret for four weeks, from July 16 news reports, a spokesman said.DNR officials have publicly acknowledged they didn’t want to harm tourism and business in the region at the start of the summer vacation season by panicking the public over high levels of E. coli bacteria, which can cause grave illness.
