“Reporters” Should Know Better

January 15th, 2009 by mopns · No Comments

We guess that the semi-retirement deal Jo Mannies worked out with Lee Enterprises was that she can now work part-time from home – and STILL not have to worry about fact checking her stories.

The story Mannies wrote today was riddled with inaccuracies and half truths. Here are the corrections:

*For purposes for federal reapportionment, the legislature draws a map and the Governor either signs or vetoes it. Our congressional districts are outlined in Chapter 128 of Missouri’s Revised Statutes.

*For legislative reapportionment, the legislature does not approve any final map.  If the commission fails to produce a map, the Chief Judge of the Missouri Supreme Court appoints a commission of judges who meet and draw the legislative maps like they did in 2001.

*Lastly the proper terminology is “reapportionment”. Redistricting is a federal process where states are allocated the number of congressional districts, reapportionment is the actual drawing of districting.

Keep up the good work Jo! If we can expect more of this kind of shoddy journalism from you, by the end of the year, they’ll be giving away Lee Enterprise stock.
