Emerson’s Food Donation Act Passes House

The Federal Food Donation Act, sponsored by Eighth District U.S. Representative Jo Ann Emerson, won unanimous passage this week in the U.S. House of Representatives.

The legislation would clear the way for donations of prepared foods from federal food service contractors to non-profit organizations which serve the hungry.

Citing 35 million Americans, 12 million of them children, who are either hungry or are right on the edge of hunger, Emerson made the case for her legislation.

“The American people are generous with their time and with their resources. Particularly during the Christmas season, they are willing to volunteer at a soup kitchen or to provide groceries to a food pantry…. The Federal Food Donation Act is one small way the federal government can mirror the everyday contributions of the constituents we serve,” Emerson said in her remarks to Congress. Read more…
