Rex Sinquefield could have retired and opted for the quiet life. Instead he left his life in California, where he ran an investment company, and returned in 2005 to St. Louis, the city in which he grew up, and threw himself into the political arena and into philanthropy.

The dining room of his house on Hortense Place in the Central West End has two tables. It is as much corporate board room as dining room, and Sinquefield frequently hosts meetings for groups in which he is involved. He sits on the boards of several well-known institutions — St. Louis Symphony Orchestra, the St. Louis Art Museum, the Missouri Botanical Garden, Opera Theater of St. Louis and St. Louis University — as well the Archdiocese of St. Louis’ investment committee.
